Pastoral Care Services

Mission

Pastoral Care Services provides an interfaith ministry of pastoral care and support to the patients, family members, visitors, and staff of Rex Healthcare. We seek to respond to the spiritual and emotional needs of persons living with the experience of illness and hospitalization while respecting their own beliefs and traditions. We believe the spiritual and emotional parts of living with illness and its meaning are vitally important for the lives and relationship of persons.

How to Contact

Chaplains are available to patients and families for support related to the impact of hospitalization, illness, grief and other issues. You can meet with the chaplain assigned to your clinical area, have your nurse page the chaplain, or call Pastoral Care office at 784 -3371 to request a visit. A chaplain is available 24 hours a day.

Chaplains are here at Rex when you need comfort and support. Chaplains are trained to provide comprehensive support in times of crisis, trauma, and grief.

  • Chaplains are there to listen when you feel vulnerable, confused, lonely, or angry.
  • Chaplains provide confidential and non-judgmental spiritual support.
  • Chaplains respect and understand various religions and cultures, and may advocate for family preferences with healthcare professionals.
  • Chaplains may assist you in making healthcare decisions.
  • Chaplains provide a calm, less anxious presence while providing comfort to you and your loved ones.

Clinical Pastoral Education

The CPE program at Rex is accredited by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc. (ACPE) to offer programs of Level I and Level II CPE.

Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is an interfaith professional theological education for ministry utilizing the clinical method of learning. In CPE, clergy, seminary students and qualified laypersons learn and practice the art of pastoral care in diverse contexts of ministry under supervision.

Out of intense involvement with persons in need and with feedback from peers and supervisors, students in CPE develop a new awareness of themselves as persons and pastors, of the needs of those with whom they minister and of the systems in which they give and receive care. From theological reflection on specific human conditions, they gain a new understanding of ministry. Within the interdisciplinary team process of helping persons, they develop skills in interpersonal and inter-professional relationships.
The first unit of CPE was conducted in 1925 by the Reverend Anton Boisen who expanded the case study method of learning to include a theological inquiry into the “living human document.” ACPE programs promote the integration of personal history, faith tradition and the behavioral sciences in the practice of spiritual care.

The focus of the CPE program at Rex Healthcare is on pastoral reflection, pastoral formation and pastoral competence through:

  • A Level I curriculum which addresses basic competencies and issues of pastoral reflection, pastoral formation and pastoral identity and functioning in one or more units of CPE; and
  • A Level II curriculum which addresses advanced competencies and issues of pastoral function, pastoral reflection and pastoral integration. A pastoral specialization may be offered at this level.
